HISTORIC OUTLINE OF LSMU

Lugansk Medical Institute was founded in 1956, when it was decided the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to establish a new academic medical institution in the city of Luhansk. In 1994 the institute was reorganized in Lugansk State Medical University. In 1997 the University was next assessed and accredited for the fourth level. University has basically two major research challenges: research design and implementation of medical-support system of victims in disasters and technological accidents and medical aspects of ecology in the industrial region of Donbass. Work on the first problem was the basis of the theory and practice of disaster medicine in Ukraine. This work was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology in 2000. Training at the University pays special attention. Each year, defending of 4-6 and 15-20 doctoral PhD theses. The university operates two specialized councils for the defense of theses. The University publishes seven scientific journals and books, which are included in the list of books approved by the VAK Ukraine. names of the rectors who headed Lugansk State Medical University over the years, known in Ukraine and abroad.

Palczewsky Eugene Gnatovych - led the institute from 25.02.1957 to 25.05.1960 R., MD, professor. Graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute, a veteran of World War II. Under his leadership, began implementation of the first scientific work of the staff and students of the Institute, opened the Academic Council and the Student Society.

Povelitsya Theodore D. - led the institute from 25.05.1960 to 18.11.1963 was, PhD, associate professor. He graduated from the Kharkov Medical First hygienic institute (1933-1936 biennium). Member of the fighting on the fronts of WWII. Much attention is paid to the development of clinical institute.

Korchykov Donat G. - Director of the Institute of 18.11.1963 to 27.12.1966 was, PhD, associate professor. In 1940-1941 he studied at the Kharkov Medical Institute, from 1941 to 1942 - in Tashkent Medical Institute in 1942-1943 - in Kharkiv infantry-mortar school, playing in fighting WWII. In 1946-1950 he studied and graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Medical Institute. Completed formation of clinical databases of the Institute, he worked part-time assistant professor of Surgery Hospital.
Chaikovskaya Irina Yosypivna - rector of the institute from January 1967 to June 1975, MD, Professor, Honored Worker of Higher School. In 1941 graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute.From 1956 to 1984 headed the Department of Human Anatomy, the years of its leadership was openly Academic special counsel for the defense of theses, built administrative building and two dormitories. The Institute became known scientific institution, furthermore, he carried a diverse educational work, in particular functioned amateur art student, began conducting medical professional orientation among rural youth. With the participation of IY Tchaikovsky at the Lugansk was carried away session of the USSR on the problems of health care workers mining industry.
Faddeev Anatoly - Rector of Medical University of 26/09/1975 to 15/08/1984 was, PhD, associate professor, head of forensic medicine. He graduated from Odessa Medical Institute in 1955
While working as the rector paid great attention to the construction of a new academic building, hostel and sports palace. Carried out the opening of new faculties: Advanced Training of Physicians (1978), Pediatrics (1983). Since 1983 began training foreign students at the medical faculty. Under his leadership, began conducting scientific research on problems of immunology and opened specialized laboratories in several departments.

Koveshnikov Vladimir G. - Rector (1984-2003 years), MD, Professor, Honoured Scientist of Ukraine, academician of the Academy of Higher Education, State Prize of Ukraine. Head of the Department of Anatomy. Graduated from the Saratov Medical Institute in 1955 carried out the changes in the institution, which in 1994 was renamed the University. In terms of academic training university holds a prestigious place among the leaders of higher medical education in Ukraine.During the leadership made ​​the organization of the construction of educational and administrative building, student dormitory, university dental clinic, the palace of the book, the stadium, "Pharmacies studio" and others. There were new departments: dental, pharmaceutical, nursing, bachelors.University became famous medical educational and research institution among the foreign countries.

Ivchenko Valery Konstantinovich - rector of the university in 2003, he graduated, MD, Professor, Honoured Scientist of Ukraine, Head of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics. The first rector elected by the staff of the university. carried out the preparation of the university to provide training of foreign students in English. Under his leadership, intensified patriotic and educational activities of the university, received a further development of student self-government, self-supporting activities of departments, the development of specialized care centers, reconstruction of classrooms, departments, services, student dormitories.
